Have you asked yourself why we have been doing an influx of burpees, target ones, bar hop ones and regular ones? Maybe you have wondered about the walking overhead lunges or the double unders happening a lot lately, or even noticed the word "open" used in workouts we have done or people talking about it. Well... it's because the CrossFit Games season is starting with the Open February 23rd. Each Thursday at 7pm CST, an announcement will be made as to what the work out will be. The first workout will be called 17.1, and we usually watch those at the gym, so feel free to stop by and check it out. We will keep the tradition of doing the Open workouts as the class workout each Friday.
What to expect...
The workouts now have and Rx and scaled version, as well as masters scaled weights and movements according to age groups. After the workout announcement is made, there is a score card that will have all of the rules, information, weights, movement standards and all other important information about the workout on it. You will pick the workout version that is best for you (and coaches will be there to help) and do the workout on Friday. If you are signed up for the Open, you will be required to follow the movement standards that are listed for your workout. If you sign up for the Open, we will have a partner count reps for you and be your "judge". You can enter your scores in at the gym or at home and they will be entered into the World Wide data base Leaderboard at the CrossFit Games website. You can see how your score stacks up against others at the gym, state, age group and around the world!
Why should I sign up for the Open? I don't Rx workouts and can't do double unders!!
The Open is a chance to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. Each year I hear many people say "I'm not good enough for the Open". In my eyes, there is no such thing as "not good enough". You come to the gym and bust your butts each day, and look where you started to where you are now! You are good enough! Last year we had many people get their first chest to bar pull up, bar muscle up, double under, box jump and much more! Each year I am amazed at how awesome people do, and you will probably surprise yourself with what you are capable of. Last year I saw a certain someone think they couldn't do bar muscle ups and in 3+ years never try them, and he ended up getting his first 9 after trying this workout. I almost had tears in my eyes! Now not everyone will be doing bar muscles just because it is the Open, but people tend to try a little harder to get movements they haven't done or tried before. It's a fun way to be apart of something as a gym and cheering each other on to fight and get that last rep!
